Orthoptic Position: Counties Manukau

Are you a dedicated Orthoptist with a passion for patient-centred care and professional excellence? We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Orthoptist to join our Ophthalmology team at Te Whatu Ora – Counties Manukau, Auckland delivering high-quality orthoptic assessments and management across our diverse community.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide expert orthoptic assessments and tailored care for adult and paediatric patients.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Nurses and Technicians.
  • Lead and manage orthoptist-led clinics independently.
  • Support clinical education and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the delivery of regional services across Counties Manukau, and other Northern region sites.

What you bring:

  • A recognised Orthoptics qualification (IOA or associate member country).
  • Registration with NZ Orthoptics Society (NZOSI) required upon commencement of employment.
  • Minimum 2 years of post-registration experience.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication, and documentation skills.
  • A commitment to cultural safety, patient rights, and service excellence.

About the role

We have a fixed-term full-time opportunity for an Orthoptist to cover a parental leave position for up to 12 months at Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand.

The role encompasses paediatric and adult orthoptic investigation, diagnosis and management, as well as Visual Fields, cataract pre-assessments – IOL-Master and ultrasound biometry, corneal topography, fundal and anterior segment photography, and general ophthalmic clinic work-up duties.

We are seeking either a recent graduate or experienced Orthoptist with good clinical knowledge, and experience with ophthalmic technical equipment, efficient and accurate work practices, and strong interpersonal skills. Christchurch Hospital services a large area of New Zealand’s South Island, is close to ski fields and ideal location to access numerous outdoor adventures and explore the spectacular scenery.

Joining a team of Registered Nurses, Ophthalmic Assistants, Orthoptists, Optometrists, and Ophthalmic Technicians; you will work closely with our highly skilled and specialised Ophthalmologists with specific interests in Paediatrics and Neuro-ophthalmology, among others. You’ll see a wide diversity of clinical practice and exposure to eye pathology not available in the community setting.

About you

You’ll have experience with a wide range of technical equipment, which will see you transition easily into our busy team consisting of allied eye professionals, as well as a large team of nurses. We’re actively involved in paediatric and adult strabismus assessments, cataract assessments – IOL master and ultrasound biometry, Visual Fields (Goldmann and Humphrey), corneal topography (Pentacam), OCT, Optos, general ophthalmic duties, auditing and research practices.

This fixed-term role is for 40 hours per week.
