About the opportunity

The Team
We're on the lookout for a flexible and passionate Orthoptist or Ophthalmic Technician to join us in the Ophthalmology Department at Christchurch Hospital, the largest public hospital in the South Island!
Joining a team of four Orthoptists, two Optometrists, two Ophthalmic Technicians; you will work closely with our highly skilled and specialised Ophthalmologists with specific interests in Paediatrics and Neuro-ophthalmology, among others. You'll see a wide diversity of clinical practice and exposure to eye pathology not available in the community setting.
This permanent role is for 40 hours per week, with the potential to be filled by two separate part-time applicants, in which the specific arrangement of these hours will be discussed and mutually agreed upon.
We are accepting applications from both Orthoptists and Ophthalmic Technicians on either a part-time or full-time basis. Please clearly indicate in your cover letter how many hours you are available for.
The Role
In this role, you will be responsible for the following:
  • Orthoptist: Providing orthoptic investigation, diagnosis and management to patients; accurate and consistent multi-media documentation of patients; providing appropriate education and training to other members of the department
  • Ophthalmic Technician: Undertaking visual function and technical tests in both adult and paediatric patients; recording test results for the referring Ophthalmologist; carrying out administrative tasks associated with the patient management system
We're actively involved in paediatric and adult strabismus assessments, cataract assessments - IOL master and ultrasound biometry, Visual Fields (Goldmann and Humphrey), corneal topography, OCT, general ophthalmic duties, auditing and research practices.
Your skills will include the following:
  • Orthoptists: Qualification to the equivalent of Bachelor of Applied Science (Orthoptics); previous experience as an Orthoptist, including ophthalmic assisting; Experience with a wide range of technical equipment, which will see you transition easily into our busy team consisting of allied eye professionals, as well as a large team of nurses; Experience in a hospital setting is advantageous
  • Ophthalmic Technician: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a collaborative team; A professional approach to your work with the ability to respect and maintain confidentiality; Computer knowledge and literacy; the ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure; previous work experience as an Ophthalmic Technician is advantageous

The Role
Our fantastic Orthoptic team is ready to welcome a new recruit into our fast paced clinical environment. The MidCentral District Health Board Ophthalmology Department operates in a middle- sized Health Board, and provides Orthoptic Services into our district. With the establishment of this role we will be delivering sub-regional support to our neighbouring DHB in Whanganui.
 
This is a traditional Orthoptist post with a mostly paediatric caseload, some adult strabismus and complex Oculomotility disorders. You would need to be able to conduct clinics autonomously and work in collaboration with the wider team and other health professionals.
 
Clinically, you will be based in Palmerston North (0.6FTE) working as part of a wider Ophthalmology team with one other Orthoptist, visiting Optometrists, 3 locally based Ophthalmologists and 2 visiting Ophthalmologists, Registrars, Nurses and Ophthalmic Technicians. You will also be providing a sub-regional Orthoptist service (0.4FTE) in the neighbouring Whanganui hospital where you will be a valued member working in collaboration with 2 locally based Ophthalmologists and eye nurses. (1FTE total between both sites)
 
If you are a qualified Orthoptist, hold an internationally recognised Orthoptic qualification and have a minimum of two years postgraduate clinical experience, this offers a wonderful opportunity to have a change of scene or make a permanent move to experience the lifestyle that New Zealand has to offer.

​We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Orthoptist to join the team!
 
Working within a team of four Orthoptists in a purpose built Ophthalmology department you will be working alongside a team of 36 consultants, 5 specialising in paediatrics, 4 in ocular plastics and 3 in adult strabismus.
 
This is your chance to let your skill set shine as you will be involved in general orthoptic clinics, adult motility, an orthoptic/optometry clinic and support of the acute ophthalmology service. You may also have the opportunity to work in visual field assessment, tonometry, and biometry and keratometry in the pre-operative work up of cataract patients.

The department will also encourage you to participate in teaching sessions for doctors, nurses and optometry students which will help broaden your clinical teaching experience.
 
To be considered for this role, you must have at least three year’s clinical experience as well practical knowledge of A scans, K readings, tonometry, Humphrey Visual Fields. Knowledge regarding Microsoft Access Database would be advantageous but not essential.
